ALERT OF PREVALENT FRAUD SCHEMES
The year's conclusion, characterized by heightened transaction demand, is also a period when fraudsters frequently exploit the situation to perpetrate scams and misappropriate customers' assets.
To guarantee safety during peak transactions, National Citizen Commercial Joint Stock Bank (NCB) advises customers to remain alert to the following scams:
• Impersonating officials from operational agencies to solicit users to download fraudulent public service programs (such as the VNeID application, Ministry of Public Security, General Department of Taxation, EVN, etc.) that contain malware. Customers install the program, which then downloads the malware to their device. The subject can then access the user's device and seize control of the mobile device, transferring all funds from the account.
• Assuming the role of a delivery person, soliciting funds to settle the transaction, and thereafter claiming that an incorrect account number has been supplied. The aforementioned account number is registered as a shipper member. Upon sending funds to that account number, the system will initiate the membership package and automatically deduct the monthly fee. When a consumer seeks a refund and wishes to terminate their membership, the subject will provide a link embedded with a harmful code, instructing the customer to click on it to quit the service. Following the instructions could compromise the phone and cause financial loss for the customer.
• Impersonating a legitimate authority (such as police or court) to inform the customer of their involvement in illicit activities, criminal offenses, or emergencies while soliciting monetary transfers to facilitate the investigation process.
• Soliciting financial investment, cryptocurrency and executing jobs with substantial commissions: The individuals solicit customers by telephoning them to engage in investment opportunities via fraudulent financial websites and applications, guaranteeing elevated interest rates and effortless fund withdrawal. Initially, the subject remitted the complete interest; nevertheless, upon the victim's subsequent deposit, the subject obstructed the account and misappropriated the total sum sent by the customer.
• Deposit transfer fraud: The individual established a page (fan page) and a social media group mimicking a travel agency, offering airline tickets, hotels, and homestays to deceive and misappropriate consumers' deposits.
• Impersonating a bank employee to facilitate credit card applications, withdraw cash from credit cards, inform customers of winnings and assist in prize collection, aid in debt resolution, support loan applications via banking platforms, facilitate credit card type changes, notify customers of account issues, report erroneous money transfers, and provide refund instructions, and solicit access to links supplied by fraudsters to acquire customer information for the purpose of misappropriating funds.
NCB advises customers to implement measures to safeguard the security of their personal information, as follows:
• Turn off Accessibility permission on Android devices for all applications using this permission.
• Do not provide personal information, card information, OTP/Smart OTP code, login name, or e-banking login password to anyone, including bank employees.
• Do not access strange applications or links when receiving them via email, text messages, social networks, or calls with requests to provide personal information and service access information.
• Only install applications provided by trusted developers from official application distribution platforms such as Google Play for Android and the App Store for iOS.
• Always verify the recipient's identity before transferring money by calling the recipient's phone number directly. Do not call for verification via chat applications (including video calls).
• SHOULD proactively lock the card and lock the payment account urgently when suspecting or detecting signs of fraud by:
+ Open the NCB iziMobile login screen, enter the wrong password 5 times in a row so that the system records the account as locked and does not allow the fraudster to log in again in the next login session.
+ Immediately call the NCB 24/7 Customer Service Center at hotline 18006166 to request to lock the card, lock the NCB iziMobile account, and receive other support.
